Link To - Roundup Mexican Drug Dealers Along Border
Federal agents have rounded up more than 750 suspects in a wide-ranging crackdown on Mexican drug cartels operating inside the United States.
More than 50 of the suspects were arrested overnight in a series of raids coordinated by the Drug Enforcement Administration aimed at capturing members of the Sinaloa cartel, blamed for a rising tide of violence in Mexico and the United States.
Another 700 suspects were arrested previously over the course of the DEA's 21-month Operation Xcellerator, officials said.

The Kansas City Star's Take On The Moore Rally
Protesters held placards and chanted their disapproval of the vote by Moore, a Kansas Democrat, in favor of the relief package.
President Barack Obama signed the measure into law on Tuesday.
Overland Park police estimated the crowd on a cold and windy Saturday morning at 200 to 300 people.
The demonstration lasted about an hour, Sgt. Todd George said.

NEW YORK – President Obama affirmed in an interview with a Spanish-language radio show that his administration is preparing to push for a new round of "comprehensive immigration reform."
The White House confirmed to WND Obama was a guest on the Univision show "Piolin por la Manana," or "Piolin in the Morning," hosted by Eddie "Piolin" Sotelo. A transcript of the interview, however, was not posted on the White House website.
"And then we've got to have comprehensive immigration reform," Obama told the radio audience, according to a transcript. "It's going to take some time to move that forward, but I'm very committed to making it happen."

Rancher Cleared in Rights Case
Jerry Seper
One of the 16 illegal immigrants allowed to bring the lawsuit is a convicted felon deported from the U.S. after a 1993 arrest on federal drug charges, court records show. Gerardo Gonzalez, 38, was convicted in September 1993 of possession of a controlled substance for sale and ordered deported to his home country.
Body scanners replace metal detectors in tryout at Tulsa airport
(Thomas Frank, USA TODAY) WASHINGTON — For the first time, some airline passengers will skip metal detectors and instead be screened by body scanning machines that look through clothing for hidden weapons, the Transportation Security Administration said Tuesday.
An experimental program that begins today at Tulsa International Airport will test whether the $170,000 body (Body scanners like the one being demonstrated here by Duran Turner at Baltimore-Washington International Airport use millimeter wave technology to find foreign objects on passengers.)
scanners could replace $10,000 metal detectors that have screened airline passengers since 1973. Airports in San Francisco, Las Vegas, Miami, Albuquerque and Salt Lake City will join the test in the next two months, TSA spokesman Christopher White said.

Kris Kobach for Secretary of State
As my Counsel at the Justice Department, Kris Kobach had a tremendous impact. He saw what needed to be done, and succeeded in making dramatic reforms quickly. His service to his country in the wake of 9/11 was extraordinary. He is exactly the kind of person that Kansas needs in the Secretary of State's office. He is a resourceful man of principle who will protect the integrity of the election process. And he knows how to cut red tape to bring new jobs to Kansas."

A teenager, prison and a commuted sentence
U.S. Rep. Mel Reynolds (D-Ill.) (center) enters court in Chicago with his wife, Marisol, and a Cook County sheriff's deputy.
In 1995, the representative from the 2nd District went to prison after being convicted of sexual misconduct with a 16-year-old campaign worker, solicitation of child pornography and obstruction of justice.
In 2001, President Bill Clinton commuted Reynolds' sentence.
In 2005, Chicago police ordered Reynolds to leave his home on Chicago's South Side because of its nearness to a school.
They cited a law that prohibits sex offenders from living within 500 feet of a dense concentration of children.

"Moore accepted $52,500"
But during the last election, Moore accepted $52,500 in campaign contributions from people and political action groups associated with those same banks — good enough for 10th place among all committee members.
“What these donations call into question is, how close is (Moore’s) scrutiny going to be,” said Massie Ritsch of the Center for Responsive Politics, which found the contributions in campaign reports.
The Financial Services Committee is one of the biggest in Congress. Its members accepted $1.8 million from the eight banks, the center found.

Linda Martinez Confirmed In Missouri
The Star’s Jefferson City correspondent
JEFFERSON CITY After weeks of debate and delay, the Missouri Senate on Tuesday approved Gov. Jay Nixon’s appointee for director of the Department of Economic Development — but not without strong accusations from a Republican senator.
Republican senators have raised several concerns regarding Martinez’s nomination, including her relationships with businesses that receive tax credits and her stance on illegal immigration policy.
Her most vocal critic: Sen. Scott Rupp, a Wentzville Republican, who questioned her dedication to enforcing state immigration law.
The appointee, St. Louis attorney Linda Martinez, has been the acting director since Nixon, a Democrat, took office nearly a month ago. The department is responsible for the state’s job-growth and economic-development efforts and awards hundreds of millions of dollars each year in tax credits and other incentives.

“While working pro bono for the Bryan Cave Law Firm, Ms Martinez led the fight to repeal duly passed city ordinances in Valley Park…put in place in 2006 to stem the tide of illegal immigrants in the small town,” the Constitution Party said in a statement".

Border-Fence Project Hits a Snag
More than 600 miles of fencing are already up -- a hodge-podge of metal panels, wire mesh and steel posts. The California, Arizona and New Mexico portions were finished largely without incident. But the last 70 miles, mostly along the Rio Grande Valley in Texas, are proving a challenge.
Crewswork on the security fence along the southern U.S. borderwest of Progresso, Texas, in December. Completing the fence is proving to be a challenge.
Opponents of the fence have petitioned the Obama administration to halt construction. Environmentalists are demanding a top-level review of the route, which they say would block such rare species as the ocelot from critical habitat. Property owners are contesting federal seizure of their land. Engineers are struggling to address flooding concerns.
And all the while, drug smugglers and illegal immigrants continue to breach the fencing that is up, forcing Border Patrol agents and contractors to return again and again for repairs. The smugglers build ramps to drive over fencing, dig tunnels under it, or use blow torches to slice through. They cut down metal posts used as vehicle barriers and replace them with dummy posts, made from cardboard.
Citing the problems, opponents of the fence are pleading with the new administration to call a time-out.
As a senator, Barack Obama voted for the border fence. But during the presidential campaign he expressed doubts about its effectiveness. "There may be areas where it makes sense to have some fencing. But for the most part, having [the] border patrolled, surveillance, deploying effective technology, that's going to be the better approach," Mr. Obama said in a primary debate.

Minuteman Wins Congressional Candidacy Challenge
February 8, 2009
Rosanna Pulido, founder of the Illinois Minutemen Project and a vocal opponent of illegal Immigration, has survived a petition challenge and will be on the Republican ballot in the 5th Congressional District primary March 3.
Pulido is a frequent and often feisty guest on the local talk-radio circuit and should prove to be an interesting candidate. The challenge to her candidacy was mounted Joshua Hoyt, executive director of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights. According to Pulido's campaign, Hoyt even questioned the validity of the signature of Pulido's father.

YOUR GOVERNMENT AT WORK
The bill currently under consideration, known as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, provides $104 billion in government funding for new construction projects including highways, schools and restoration of public housing – to generate jobs for some of the 11.1 million unemployed Americans.
However, unlike the version introduced by Rep. Jack Kingston, R-GA, and approved by the House, HR 1, the Senate bill would not prohibit several hundred thousand illegal aliens from acquiring those jobs and sending the money back to their home countries.
The House of Representatives version strictly prohibits contractors from hiring employees without first checking the E-Verify system, which allows employers to verify whether potential employees are authorized to work in the U.S. The program compares employee information with more than 444 million records in the Social Security Administration database and more than 60 million records in the Department of Homeland Security immigration database.

Useless Signs
But gunfire broke out Friday apparently after an argument that did not involve the players. One witness told police he heard an automatic weapon “being shot all over.”
The incident was reported at 7:34 p.m. during a basketball game for two 18-and-under boys teams in league play. The gym had been rented by the Guadalupe Center, which has used the Aguirre Center without incident for more than five years, according to the department. The teams are not affiliated with any school district, park officials said.

Deep sea explorers find wreckage of HMS Victory
The Associated Press - Kansas City Star TAMPA, Fla. Deep-sea explorers who found $500 million in sunken treasure two years ago say they have discovered another prized shipwreck: A British man-of-war that sank in the English Channel 264 years ago.
The wreckage of the HMS Victory, found below about 330 feet of water, may carry an even bigger jackpot. Research indicates the ship was carrying 4 tons of gold coins when it sank in a storm, said Greg Stemm, co-founder of Odyssey Marine Exploration.
So far, two brass cannons have been recovered from the wreck, Stemm said. The Florida-based company said it is negotiating with the British government on collaborating on the project.
“This is a big one, just because of the history,” Stemm said.
